Something of a well-kept secret, the village of Painswick never disappoints with truly breath-taking views over the Painswick valley (it’s no coincidence that it’s described as the ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’). The aged Cotswold stone here has a mellow silver shade and the winding lanes of the town are sleepily romantic. There’s a cutting edge here too though; Painswick is developing an artisan, alternative feel in line with the rest of the Stroud area (described by Jasper Conran as ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’).

Painswick tips from the hotel

Stroud is our nearest town (4 miles away) and has a buzzy and exciting farmers’ market every Saturday. There is a direct rail route from London to Stroud and the team can arrange a complimentary transfer to hotel (if booked in advance).

The ACP (Art Couture Painswick) Festival in July champions wearable art. Past judges (from Grayson Perry to Lily Allen) have reflected the area’s high celeb count. On the edge of the village, Painswick Rococo Garden is, literally, unique. Britain’s only Rococo garden echoes the seductive drama of the period (the café’s home-made cakes are pretty sexy too).

Walk: Painswick Beacon

4.7 miles (7.6km) | 3 hours
Painswick Beacon, a.k.a. Kimsbury Fort, a.k.a. Castle Godwin is an Iron Age fort on a hill-top with amazing views across Cotswold country to the Severn Vale and Wales beyond. We recommend walking from the hotel for the full experience, but a shorter car-based option is available if time is short.

For the route, just ask at reception.
