Woodchester Mansion

Nr Nympsfield, Stroud, Gloucestershire

Woodchester MansionWoodchester Mansion is an enigmatic visitor attraction. It’s a one-off, run by its own charitable trust and a unique listed Victorian Gothic revival mansion in a Cotswolds valley, near Nympsfield. Now, the word ‘unique’ is one of the most heavily used words in tourist brochures - but here’s why.

The house is an unfinished masterpiece. Building work halted abruptly in the 1860s. Despite the fact that the construction project was heading towards completion, In a way visiting Woodchester is like visiting a building site, but a building site that is over 150 years old.  It exposes the mason’s craft, the secrets of construction and the bare bones of unplastered and unglazed windows and walls.

The Gothic nature of the property is enhanced by breeding colonies of Horseshoe bats (viewable on CCTV). It’s all perfect material for romance and ghost stories and even Derek Acorah (oh dear) turned up to go into one of his professional trances. Quite how he found Woodchester to be haunted when it has never really been occupied was perhaps the biggest mystery of all. The site was used as a location for a 2006 BBC production of Dracula, starring Rafe Spall as Harker and David Suchet as Van Helsing.

American and Canadian servicemen used the lake for bridge-building practice in WW2.

Note that Woodchester is NOT National Trust but that the surrounding Woodchester Park, is. Nympsfield is near Stroud. If using SatNav, the post code of the Mansion is GL10 3TS - although do bear in mind that there is no access to Woodchester Park or Mansion from the A46. Some SatNav systems think otherwise.

Sensible shoes are recommended. It’s a building site. It’s child friendly but you need to keep a close eye on them.

Nearby Coaley Peak viewpoint is recommended too.
