Nature in Art
Wallworth Hall, near Twigworth, Gloucestershire
Nature in Art is a bit of a one-off. Basically it’s a gallery dedicated solely to art inspired by nature. A permanent collection includes art from the last 1500 years and there are visiting exhibitions and artists at work. There’s an outdoor sculpture area too.
The building, the 18thC Wallworth Hall, is remarkable in its own right. It’s a very nicely proportioned Georgian mansion rated by Simon Jenkins in his ‘England’s 1000 best houses’ book. Pleasant gardens too.
As a theme-led collection, the permanent galleries embrace artists from around the world and many different media. Dropable names include Picasso, Jan van Kessel the Younger, Venuto and Lalique - with local stars such as Peter Scott and David Shepherd.
Nature in Art is a quirky, yet ambitious, place run by passionate people. It’s amongst the lesser-known Gloucestershire attractions, but is definitely good for entertaining couple of hours.
Art courses at Nature in Art run through the year and are friendly and unpretentious. They tend to run at weekends.
The attraction runs an Artist in Residence scheme, which sees various artists working for a week at time through the year. You’ll have the chance to see them at work and ask a few questions.
If you like art and/or animals Nature in Art is a good call and a great wet weather back up.
