Kiftsgate Court Garden

Near Chipping Campden

Kiftsgate Court GardenOne of the great gardens of Gloucestershire, home of the Kiftsgate Rose.

Visitors often pass the entrance to Kiftsgate Court on the way to the entrance of the National Trust Garden at Hidcote Manor. They might be making a mistake…

Kiftsgate Court is privately owned and has been designed by three generations of women, each of whom has left her mark on this Cotswold terraced garden. The gardens happen to surround what is, surely, one of the best houses in Gloucestershire. Kiftsgate is romantic and inspirational, with many unusual shrubs and plants. Star of the show is the Kiftsgate Rose, the largest in England, which climbs up through a handily supportive tree or two. It’s a remarkable sight. Aside from that white, rose, sunken and wild gardens are matched by exquisite borders, a pool and a water feature. The rose garden is edged with pink striped Rosa Mundi, older and some modern roses.  Head down to the lower garden for some cleverly chosen shade garden plants (such as cistus and ceonothus) as well as surprisingly long views over towards the Malvern Hills.

If you’re planning a visit in combination with Hidcote (is there a better day out for garden lovers?) do pay attention to opening days as they don’t always open on the same day.

There is a good plant stall by the entrance and you’ll often meet the current owner, Anne Chambers. Tea room is nicely done.
