Giffords Circus 2019 Season
Various Cotswolds locations
This is posh circus, smartened up for the 21st century, with bags of charm. Horses, humans and the odd duck make an appearance.
Giffords is everyone's idea of a good night out. A touring circus has been recreated and visits various Cotswold locations through the summer, from pub grounds to Blenheim Palace. Click on the Giffords Circus website for precise dates and locations. Giffords Circus is highly recommended - it's just the right side of twee and conjures up some of the romance and authenticity of old English touring shows, whilst being absolutely nothing to do with the exploitative animal circuses of yesteryear. The show is always entertaining, but catch Giffords on the right sunny summer evening and you'll catch a genuine sense of atmosphere and nostalgia - a magical experience in fact.
The house clown, Tweedy, has a cult following and appears in Cheltenham's annual Pantomime, and this year he also had a bash at Waiting for Godot too. Giffords is just right for adults as well as children. The 2019 show is called 'Xanadu' - perhaps sensibly they've pulled back on some of the more ambitious concepts of previous years. 'War and Peace', for example, aimed perhaps a little high for its small circus ring setting, even if it was still thoroughly entertaining.
If you want to push the boat out, book dinner at Circus Sauce, the in-house restaurant. Portions are notoriously enormous.
You may need to book ahead, since the locals have really taken Giffords to their hearts.
