Football in the River
Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire
Two teams from Bourton Rovers play a six-a-side match in, um, the river. It's exhausting, even to watch.
The Cotswolds is famous for its slow-flowing and clean rivers. The Windrush, which flows through Bourton is especially shallow and so perhaps it was inevitable that someone would come up with the idea of playing football there.
There’s a lot of splashing, the crowd often get pretty wet too. Wettest person of all is usally the referee.
Admission is free. Kick off is usually 4pm, with a village fete held late morning - it all makes Bourton the place to be on Bank Holiday Monday. It can get crowded.
