Stroud Farmers Market

Stroud, Gloucestershire

Stroud is a place where things get made and done. It has a lefty, alternative feel  - especially on Saturdays, when the Farmers Market is one of the best places to be in the Cotswolds.

Plan to arrive soon after the 9am opening time, before the doughnuts sell out. You’ll find a good range of proper suppliers (Stroud has avoided the chintzy, home made fudge atmos of many such markets). This may be because the market was an early arrival on the Farmers Market scene and it has grown with growth of food producers and makers in the area.

The setting is town centre - the old Cornhill Market and surrounding streets. Amongst the highlights? Good local cheeses, a great WI stall, Days Cottage Apple Juice and Madgetts chicken and game. Try a Stroud pastie - the root veggie one is good. Stroud is also a good place to pick up flowers and plants. The

Farmers market runs alongside a traditional fruit and veg market, which seems to work for everyone.

Look out for Dennis Gould’s letter press prints and second hand books. He’s an interesting guy and his hand printed poems and quotes pre-empted the internet’s inspirational quotes by about forty years.  ‘Clover’ Bushell is another Stroud legend - a keyboard street musician who cheers you up no end.

Around the market are various cafes and tea rooms - Woodruffs and Mills cafe for example.

A great way to spend a Saturday morning.  Foodies should carry on to Nailsworth village for Williams Kitchen and Hobbs House Bakery.
