Cotswolds Distillery

Stourton, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire

Cotswold DistilleryA relative newcomer to the Cotswolds scene, Cotswolds Distillery is made a big impact, initially with the success of its Cotswolds Dry Gin. The long-term game plan, however, was all about whisky production. New Yorker Dan Szor was the founder, noting the Cotswolds clean water, barley and deciding that a great whisky could be made here. It looks like he’s right. The first release spirit scored 94/100 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

The distillery itself is set in 5 acres in the Warwickshire Cotswolds. For visitors, it’s an attractive place to visit, all Cotswold stone, oak barrels and copper pot stills. There are tours and tastings every day. Tours go at 11am, 1pm and 3pm - it’s important to book these in advance, as they’re often full to capacity. On the other hand you can simply treat the place as a shop, tastle proucts as you look around.

Cotswolds Distillery Gin is popular, having mirrored the boom in gin sales across Britain. Botanicals include grapefruit and lime - and lavender from nearby Snowshill.  The whisky, made with local barley and floor-malted is truly exceptional and offer great promise for the future.
