Cheltenham Racing - The Showcase
National Hunt Racing at its best
The 2018 Season runs between the 26th October and the 3rd May. There are 8 meetings between these dates, with the climax being The Festival, between 12 and 15th of March, 2019. Thousands of visitors descend upon the town and it’s wise to book tickets and accommodation far ahead.
This is National Hunt Racing, which means that horses jump over hurdles or fences. It’s also less socially complicated than flat racing at the likes of Ascot or The Derby.
Cheltenham racing is a democratic affair with the emphasis on love of the sport, rather than love of bling. You can wear jeans, you can wear a morning suit, you’ll find the same kind of welcome. The season runs through the winter, so often the best advice is to dress warm. If you’ve been invited and not sure about whether racing is for you, relax - the people watching is phenomenal.
Racing takes place at Prestbury Park on the edge of town. The Cotswold escarpment forms the background to this wonderful natural amphitheatre.
