Blenheim Palace

OK, Blenheim may have lost a bit of Palace-cred when a Mr  Trump visited recently, but it has seen them come and it has seen them go. It remains unrivalled in terms of non-Royal palaces in Britain. 

The site was given by the nation to commemorate the military victory of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough over assorted French and Bavarian armies in 1704.

The garden at Rousham is something of an undiscovered gem. Before there was 'Capability' Brown there was William Kent. Rousham is where to explore his work in the first phase of English landscape design. One of Monty's Don's favourites.

Highgrove Garden has increasingly opened up to visitors in recent years. The initial appeal may be curiosity about an opportunity to view what is The Prince of Wales’ own garden, but this is an appealing garden in its own right. 

Batsford Arboretum

Batsford, near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire

A dog-friendly arboretum and garden centre in the North Cotswolds. There are 58 acres to explore, making it the largest privately-owned tree collection for some distance.
